Nestled on the banks of the Gros Ventre River with views of the Teton Range, this Jackson Hole dude ranch is not to be missed. During your stay, you’ll enjoy activities such as horseback riding, world class fly fishing, hiking, relaxing and more.

Accommodating only 40 guests per week, you will be treated like family at Gros Ventre River Ranch. Their meals are chef-prepared and delicious, and you can enjoy complimentary wine and beer in the bar area and relax on the porch to watch the sunset in the evenings.

The whole family will enjoy the main lodge, which has a beautiful living and dining room, as well as a game room with a pool table, foos ball and more. The historic cabins have a rustic feel, but have been remodeled to meet today’s standard of Western luxury and comfort.

Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 0 and over

A guest ranch is the perfect place for youngsters. Your kids can fish with you at the ponds, get out the row boat or play on the dock, tube down the river, play in the main yard on the play set, start up a game of tetherball or soccer, ride a mountain bike around the ranch, climb the small-scaled boulders on the ranch and play pool or ping-pong in the recreation room!

While group horseback trail rides are limited to ages seven and up, children 3-6 years old are welcome to explore the ranch on horseback, led by their parent and a wrangler on foot.

Kids find that their imagination is very active out in the open and often end up having the most fun!

Ranch History

Previously run as a hunting camp in the early 1950s, the property was purchased in 1958 by Roy and Becky Chambers. They restored the camp and opened the Flying V Guest Ranch in 1966. After 20 years in operation, Roy and Becky sold to the late Karl Weber and his wife Tina, who continued with the tradition of guest ranching, opening the Gros Ventre River Ranch in 1987.

In 1925, the ranch had a brush with disaster when a nearby mountain collapsed in a massive landslide. The town of Kelly, downriver from the Ranch, was nearly wiped out and even Jackson, 18 miles distant, had knee-deep mud in the streets. The slide formed a dam across the Gros Ventre River, creating Slide Lake. The slide path is still easily recognizable today at the eastern ridge of the ranch.

The Gros Ventre River Ranch continues to remain in the family. Along with Tina, daughter Tori and son-in-law Sean McGough handle the daily operations. They pride themselves in maintaining the wonderful traditions of the Western culture and sharing the love for the ranching lifestyle with guests, and preserving the history of the Gros Ventre River Ranch helps them do just that!

At this Jackson Hole Dude Ranch, dining is serious business! One evening they’ll be fixin’ a casual gourmet meal in the main lodge dining room with Bananas Foster for dessert. Another evening they’ll dine outdoors in the open yard enjoying a Western BBQ complete with a cowboy singer around the campfire.

Breakfast is hot and made to order. For those short on time, there’s always a buffet with assorted cereals, homemade pastries and fresh fruits. A favorite lunch is the hamburger BBQ picnic on a nearby butte reachable via horseback. If you can’t wait for the next meal, dive into the bottomless cookie jar, always stocked with hot out-of-the-oven favorites.

If you mention a tie at any of the meals, it had better be in reference to fly fishing! While the sit-down dinners can be described as fine dining, the dress code is anything but formal. Jeans and boots go well with rack of lamb, elk tenderloin and grilled salmon!

Riding considerations

no riding experience needed, We consider height and athletic ability as well as a guest's weight

Why our riding stands out

  • Advanced Rides- Our guests have the opportunity to lope beginning Tuesday afternoons.
  • Terrain we ride- We have been granted permits from Grand Teton National Park, Bridger Teton National Forest, and the National Elk Refuge to ride on their land. This makes our rides much more expansive than if we were limited to land owned by our ranch.
  • Our guests are assigned a horse for their entire week with us to promote bonding. Because we own all of our horses, many of our returner guests will ride the same horse year after year!
