Environmental & Social Practices

Environment

Our Philosophy Since its inception in 1995, Echo Valley Ranch & Spa has embraced the values of a Triple Bottom Line philosophy. Caring as much for its people as it does for the environment, the ranch has enjoyed success as an eco-aware destination long before 'living green' became a mainstream movement Lying at the heart of four distinct geographic regions, the diverse and unspoiled wilderness of the place exudes a heritage of pristine beauty. The landscapes not only instill a sense of awe in all who come here, they re-invigorate the mind, body and spirit in extraordinary ways. Such gifts are rare, and are why everyone at Echo Valley sees themselves as caretakers of the land. We take our responsibility seriously because we know that in return, the land will continue to nurture all those who visit for generations to come. How We Walk the Talk We are committed to:

•Being active and environmentally-conscious stewards of our land •Making environmental and socially-aware choices in our day-to-day operations •Always striving to improve the ways we can contribute to a carbon neutral operation •Practicing zero-waste in our food acquisition and production •Use of recycled paper for all collateral materials and a reduction of paper mail outs through the use of electronic brochure distribution Energy & Water Conservation Our back-of-house operations minimize our carbon footprint through: •Water efficient plumbing installations such as toilets, shower heads and faucets •Energy efficient lighting in guest rooms, common areas and storage areas •Two self-sustaining geothermal systems that heat the Baan Thai, swimming pool and Lookout Lodge •Supplemental energy that is generated hydraulically or with propane, both of which deliver zero to a low C02 emissions •Water sourced from naturally fed springs on site

Waste Management Our recycle, reuse, repurpose efforts minimize our carbon footprint through: •A bio-degradable sanitation system that recycles waste fluids as organic fertilizers into the surrounding landscape •A ranch-wide recycling/re-use program, including guest programs that encourage linen and towel reuse •A no-go plastic bottle zone - guests are provided with reusable metal water bottles, and water stations are located throughout the property •The use of recycled paper for all collateral materials •The preference for electronic brochure distribution and social media advertising programs to help reduce paper-based mail outs and promotion •Ranch raised beef, pork, turkeys and chickens for organic meats and dairy products •A ranch kitchen garden that uses organic fertilizers and companion plantings which act as natural insect repellents •Zero kitchen waste -- all leftovers are used in the garden or as food for ranch animals Carbon credits •Purchasing carbon credits to offset those C02 emissions generated by guests traveling to the ranch Environmental and Social Choices We believe that our responsibility as stewards of the land extends to the community with whom we share this wilderness. We believe that all cultures can live and learn from each other in harmony, and make every effort that our staff reflects the traditions of many nationalities. This includes our working alongside the local First Nations peoples whose territory lies at our door, as well as with others in our local community so that we all might prosper.

Ranch History

Located in the heart of British Columbia's Cariboo, Echo Valley Ranch & Spa has a unique cultural history and bio-diversity.

It was in the 1850s when gold was found along the Cariboo river's pebbly sand bars, attracting thousands of fortune-seekers. But with the majority barely making enough to pay for supplies or losing their fortunes through gambling, prospectors soon took their quest for gold further north. When young Cornish sailor Billy Barker struck the mother lode, a new wave of hopefuls arrived and the township adopted the name Barkerville. Its mining population grew enormously and, in order to support this, numerous roadhouses were established at various points along the route to the gold fields. Ranches soon sprung up around these roadhouses and before long, a small cattle industry emerged.

Evidence of the Canyon's history is easily reached from Echo Valley; remnants of shanty huts still sit along the Fraser River, parts of the original Chinese mining flumes still endure, and fields of washed stones still lie on the river's shores. Many original homestead structures still remain, including a log house, a root cellar and two animal shelters. Guests can take trail rides past many of these historic sites, ride down the ancient wagon road towards the Fraser – and even try panning for gold!

Your Chef, Chef JK

Chef JK brings a deep love for food and decades of culinary experience to our table. His appreciation for local and organic food and foraging pairs well with our focus on "farm-fresh". The Setting

Private Land (10,000-20,000 acres)

Sitting amidst four distinct geographic regions, called biomes, Echo Valley's landscape includes semi-desert along the Fraser, boreal forests in most of the valley bottoms, and treeless mountains in between which is a glaciated plateau - a former volcanic plain that today is interspersed with montane forests, meadows and rolling grasslands. The natural spring water is some of the purest to be found, and the pristine climate promotes toxin-free harvests of fresh produce. The result is an unparalleled destination of well-being; an extraordinary range of eco/soft adventures; and scenery that is both awe-inspiring and breath-taking.

Public Land (more than 50k acres)

Echo Valley is surrounded by millions of acres of Crown Land which the ranch is permitted to use

Visitor Reviews

Dont just take our word for it, see what visitors like you say...

Our new family tradition

Echo Valley Ranch will now be our family's annual vacation spot! My boys loved the wide open space. They played fetch with the ranch dogs and rode the gentle horses. I loved having a chef! Every meal was lovingly prepared. We stayed in a lovely log home with a four poster bed, fine linens and a deep soaker tub. There were two queen size beds in our home and a fun loft for the boys upstairs. Very good coffee was always available in the lounge very early in the morning with jars of freshly baked cookies. There is so much for families to do at Echo Valley Ranch. Fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking, spa treatments, yoga, bike riding, climbing on tractors and trees. The drive up to the ranch was something else. Don't be put off by the length of the drive. It is breathtaking and certainly a special part of the trip. I left Echo Valley Ranch a different person. We will most certainly be back every year.
