Environmental & Social Practices

  • Environment

  • Since we opened as a dude ranch in 1929, Mountain Sky Guest Ranch has topped the list of the nation's upscale guest ranch resorts, and there is no big secret to our success. While there's no doubt you'll admire the breathtaking views, fine food, amenities and luxury environment, it's our staff who make the difference. When you arrive at the ranch, you become a member of the Mountain Sky family.

  • Community

  • Known by guests for caring, attentive service, the staff at Mountain Sky is known by residents in the local community for the same thing. Throughout the year, our staff gives back to the communities in which they live and work — through their physical involvement and through grants made to non-profit organizations by the Mountain Sky Guest Ranch Fund. Established in 2001, the Fund has exceeded $4.0 million in grants.

The mission of the Mountain Sky Guest Ranch Fund is to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Park and Gallatin Counties in Montana. The Mountain Sky staff is especially interested in supporting projects in rural areas where resources and services are limited, to address community challenges.

  • Food

  • For an unforgettable dining experience, just leave it to our chefs!  You'll soon find that our meals are one of the most memorable parts of your stay at the ranch.

Breakfast and lunch buffets are sumptuous spreads providing a variety of options for every taste, and dinners are gourmet 3 to 5 course plated affairs.  Bison tenderloin, fresh Alaskan Halibut, and truffled Portobella pasta are just a few examples of our evening entrees, and our chefs are happy to accommodate special requests and unique dietary requirements.

Our property begins near the mighty Yellowstone River on the floor of the aptly-named Paradise Valley, and continues upward through grass-covered foothills, meadows filled with sagebrush, thick pine forests and stands of aspen until you reach the vast Gallatin National Forest at our back door. The trout-filled, rushing waters of Big Creek flow 4.5 miles through the entire property, linking the main lodge and our guest cabins with our working ranch operation down below. With all of this beauty at our fingertips, it can be easy to overlook the fact that one of the world's greatest natural wonders - Yellowstone National Park - is just a picturesque 30 minute drive away.

For an unforgettable dining experience, just leave it to our gourmet chefs. You will soon discover that Mountain Sky meals are one of the most memorable parts of your stay at the ranch.

Our buffet-style breakfasts offer a wide variety of choices – from freshly baked pastries and muffins, to fresh fruits, yogurt and homemade granola. You can also enjoy more traditional favorites, such as made-to-order omelets, sweet Montana huckleberry pancakes, or eggs Benedict.

Lunches on the ranch are casual, delicious meals served buffet-style, and always include a variety of green and pasta salads, homemade soups, fresh berries, melons and cheeses. Our chefs also prepare a selection of tempting regional dishes, ranging from Mexican enchiladas to Chinese stir-fry to Italian pizza. Have a sweet tooth? Our homemade cookies are baked fresh every day!

After a day filled with ranch activities, dinner is always a highly anticipated event. We kick things off with hors d'oeuvres and drinks in the saloon, where friends share stories of the day's adventure next to a crackling fire. What follows is an unforgettable three- to five-course dinner featuring carefully crafted and regionally-inspired dishes prepared by Chef Jonathan Romans and his talented team. Complement your dinner with a bottle of wine from our fine selection, and do try to leave room for that slice of chocolate decadence or basque cake.

We are happy to accommodate any dietary needs, requests, or allergies.

The history of Mountain Sky Guest Ranch epitomizes the authenticity and romance of Montana's Paradise Valley and the American West.

The warm Western hospitality and superb service enjoyed by today's guests have deep roots in the ranch's history as a working and guest ranch. Serving guests since 1929, the ranch and its historic buildings resonate with the memories and storied lore of the Old West.  Through successive ownerships, the AAA 4-Diamond rated dude ranch was officially named Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in 1979.

Today, guests who vacation at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch share in the wonder of the "pretty little canyon" discovered by Nelson Story at the turn of the century (read more here: The romance between the land and its guests continues, warming cabins, lodge and countryside with the same Western-style friendships and conversation celebrated here since 1929.

  • Owner - Arthur M. Blank

  • Atlanta Falcons owner, co-founder of Home Depot, Arthur Blank escapes every summer to Mountain Sky Guest Ranch. He and his family first visited in the summer of 1999. He loved it so much that in the fall of 2001 he bought the place. Arthur spends five to six weeks at the ranch every year – without TV, radio, cell phones or a Blackberry.

    In his own words:

"When I was younger, I did a lot of horseback riding. I rode at several camps in upstate New York. I used to teach hunter jumping when I was a teenager... I wanted a place to get away from the East Coast and get into the mountains, a place that was unique.

We have slightly over 17,000 acres. It backs up to the Gallatin National Forest, which is 1.4 million acres. It’s beautiful country. The weather is great. Days are long. Sometimes there’s light until 10 o’clock at night.

We have a place on the beach in Hilton Head and we love that. But this is very remote. At Hilton Head we have all the distractions you can have at home. At the ranch, it’s almost like living in a cocoon. It’s very much a nurturing kind of atmosphere. Part of the tone is there’s no TVs, no radios, no newspapers. People come there and spend a lot more time talking to each other, communicating with their families and their friends. People just get away from all of the noise that’s in their life.

It does very much the same thing for me. I spend more time with the family. I read more. I have more time to reflect. I don’t wear a watch. When I do work, at most it’s a couple of hours a day.

It’s just amazing quite honestly how much doesn’t change in the world, nothing of substance. The stuff that happens that you don’t know about really aren’t things you want to hear about or know about any way. You just get all of that out of your life."

I’m still grateful every day to be part of such an incredible community.

Those merely wanting to get their feet wet can opt for fly-fishing instruction at the trout pond – a gentle introduction to casting and technique. Nearby Big Creek, a densely populated Cutthroat Trout fishery, is just a short walk from the lodge.

Whitewater rafting with the Flying Pig Raft Company, drift boat fly-fishing trips on the Yellowstone River with Angler's West, and sporting clays are some of the many activities available in Paradise Valley. These activities can be booked at our front desk, and we are happy to provide transportation and off-site meals when required.

    Self-Guided Fun

In addition to our on-site and off-site activities, there are opportunities for a little self-directed fun! Equipment is available at the front desk for anyone interested in getting some friends together for the following activities: Tennis, horseshoes, basketball, soccer, football, bocce ball or roasting "s'mores" - an activity we take quite seriously around here.

  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming

  • Perched more than 1.2 miles above sea level, the Town of Jackson was at once cowboy and cosmopolitan. On Town Square, log cabins from the 19th century share the boardwalk with prime examples of contemporary Western architecture. Locally-owned boutiques with runway fashions rub elbows with Western shops stocking t-shirts and lariats. Galleries abound with artwork as diverse as downtown itself, from historic scenes of Mountain Men to abstractions by blue-chip masters. A plethora of restaurants plates a commensurate array of culinary adventures, from choice meats sourced locally to culinary creativity rivaling most metropolises. Small in size but not personality, the town spans 2.9 square miles. Tucked in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Jackson sits 15 miles from Idaho border, 12 miles south of Grand Teton National Park, 12 miles southeast of Teton Village, and 60 miles south of Yellowstone National Park. Jackson prides itself on its trailblazing heritage. In 1920, residents elected the U.S.’s first all-female city council. Snow King Resort, known as the Town Hill, was established in 1930 – the first ski area in Wyoming and one of the first in the country.
