Environmental & Social Practices

  • Environment

  • Texas Ranch Life, and John and Taunia Elick, have been honored by the United States Secretary of the Interior for their efforts in wildlife preservation and habitat creation. We practise responsible game management in all of our hunting efforts, and follow the Texas Parks and Wildlife guidelines and recommendations for our area of central Texas.

The baby turkeys were hatched in our incubators this spring, and will be released into the wild with adult turkeys to learn how to survive and assimilate into the wild.

At Texas Ranch Life we recycle in all our facilities and offer our guests the opportunity to do the same, so that we can have the smallest impact possible on our environment. Our ranch was founded on the principle of recycling - eight of our houses were saved from demolition when Taunia moved them to the ranch and restored them. At Texas Ranch Life we value responsible living and the preservation of Texas history.

  • Food

  • We have five organic gardens at Texas Ranch Life, and a greenhouse where we grown vegetables and flowers to be used at the ranch.

Our gardens and greenhouse are watered by conserved rain water collected from the ranch. We also cultivate lakes and ponds to naturally provide irrigation to the ranch, as well as create a beautiful environment for recreating.

  • Conservation

  • The livestock at Texas Ranch Life enjoy the most humane way of life which, for them, is the natural way of life that exists in wild.

Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 8 and over

Children of all ages will enjoy spending time here with their parents. With the ranch gardens, the fishing, exploring, hay rides, horseback riding and all the ranch has to offer, children enjoy this ranch experience.

Children especially love the kids corral. Let your kids experience Texas first hand in our kids' corral. Open weekends on advance reservation, parents can bring their kids down to the tack room at the Headquarters Barn to rummage in our trunks of western gear, try on their best cowboy or Indian disguise, learn about the habitat of the ranch, Texas cowboy ranchin' history and take home an educational Texas Ranch Life kids activities book.

Parents can play billards in the tack room, hang out in the barn alley or work in the business center while their kids enjoy the 'corral'.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and supervised during their visit. Parents are responsible for their kids safety at all times. Texas Ranch Life representatives may be on hand to meet your kids and answer questions, but their presence is not guaranteed as there may be ranch business or cattle and horses that need tending during this time.

The Lonesome Pine Ranch was originally settled by two of Stephen F Austin's "old 300" families, Joel Leakey and James Stevenson who, back in the early 1830s, had their pick of the best spots in Texas. The descendants of these two settlers are still in the area today.

In January 1821, Austin's father, Moses Austin, received a permit from the Spanish to settle 300 families in Texas, however he died in Missouri a short time later before he could realize his plans.

Early in life, John's father, Jerry Elick, instilled in him an appreciation for the land, which he learned from his father, a Czech immigrant in the 1800s, who also believed in hard work and dedication. Together John and Taunia have continued that legacy at Texas Ranch Life, using their land to preserve a working piece of Texas history and their family's history, while restoring the land to its natural glory.
