Multi use landscape that each forum compliments the others to create a healthy and diverse ecosystem. The mission statement for the High Lonesome describes a "model of sustainability" that preserves stewardship of a large western landscape, maintains biodiversity and ecological connectivity, enhances the lives of wildlife and fish, and preserves and restores degraded habitat while allowing a mix of uses - primarily ranching, recreation, and research.

Community

The Ranch is heavily involved in a local Parade, acknowledges local boys and girls with a free upland bird hunt in partnership with Colorado parks and Wildlife annually.Host a fundraising trail ride annually for the Wild Horse foundation. Provides outdoor courses thru local High Schools for Mesa and Garfield Counties.

Conservation

The High Lonesome Ranch hosts numerous national and international conferences due to its living example of conservation and stewardship.

Ranch History

A modern wilderness with a healthy respect for the past. If it’s possible to improve on what nature intended, this would be the place.

Our ranch is where brave and hardy pioneers settled at the turn of the century. Today at The High Lonesome Ranch, we diligently continue their ranching heritage, reinvesting a large portion of our revenues and using the latest conservation practices to enhance the land and waters, wildlife and fish, as well as the new best practices in ranching.

The Setting

Private Land (20,000-40,000 acres)

The High Lonesome Ranch sits along the spine of the continent on the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies. A national park-scale landscape perfectly situated to help connect large ecosystems, we are right on a key habitat corridor. We are working to restore, conserve, and steward a large western landscape, which contributes to a western wildway for wildlife to roam and thrive that stretches from Mexico to Canada. A private conservation organization founded over 20 years ago, we are addressing the challenges of stewarding this landscape for habitat connection while we still can, and encouraging people to use it. With mountain forests, grasslands, spring creeks, and alpine mesas at an altitude that ranges from 4,000 to 9,000 feet, the ranch is home to diverse wildlife and provides a vast playground for sports and wilderness activities.

Public Land (more than 50k acres)

We want guests to share our landscape. Our mission to restore this ecosystem and conserve this swath of land while inviting use of it is only one of the things that sets us apart from other ranches. We are a working cattle ranch, use new best practices on the land, raise our own The High Lonesome Ranch Angus grassfed beef, and age it on the Ranch. Outdoor sports, laid-back luxury lodging, world-class local farm-to-table food, good people, and beautiful landscapes are just some of what we have to offer.

Highs

  • Unique and breathtaking scenery and terrain: heavily timbered north slopes contrast sharply with the eroding clay buttes on the south slopes.
  • They offer on-ranch fishing with private guide, stocked ponds and streams allow even the novice to enjoy fishing
  • Their cuisine is of high priority. Tasteful and innovative dinners, you also won't want to miss breakfasts with Aunt Linda and her organic granola!
  • Accommodating and customizable experience with conservation and education at the heart of the ranch

Lows

  • Because of the terrain, sometimes on shorter rides you'll see the same country and views twice

Beautiful getaway!

We aren't hunters or fishers and yet we enjoyed being at the HLR so much! Beautiful scenery, lots of wildlife to see, isolated and quiet, and GREAT food and excellent lodging!! Had very enjoyable chats with other guests as we all shared meals and friendly conversation.
