Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 7 and over

Kids are the heart of the Bar W Ranch.

They begin with learning to groom, saddle, feed and take care of their own horse. Throughout the week there are special kids rides and games in the arena.

The age limit for going on the trail rides is 7 years old. We have pony rides and babysitting for the smaller cowpokes. Throughout the week our kids counselor supervises activities such as paint your horse, nature walks, kids only dinners and more. There is a great game room with crafts, pool table, darts and games.

Detailed Activities

  • Games

    pool table, darts, games
  • Riding based activities

horse care, pony rides, arena riding, trail riding

The idea of the Bar W originated in 2000. It began with a father’s longing to escape the rigors and chaos of the office and stave off burnout. He came to Montana with his two young daughters, Meghan (age 9) and Emily (age 7).

Dave Leishman, future owner of the Bar W, and his daughters were persuaded by longtime friend and owner of the Double D Guest Ranch in New Jersey(and now Bar W partner) Phil Dukes to head West and make the trip to the Bear Creek Ranch. Dave’s fears and doubts about his riding skills quickly abated. In no time, he and the girls were riding to the tops of ridges, where they could gaze at the Big Sky countryside for 130 miles in every direction.

It turned out to be a vacation for the ages – one of those life-changing, priority-altering experiences many people wait a lifetime for. It was a whole package - the riding, the western way of life, the rodeos, the work, and the people – a true total experience. Dave and the girls drew closer on each subsequent trip to Montana; it was an adventure that they shared year after year. He was hooked. So much so that after the next four annual trips Dave decided that a yearly excursion to Montana just was not enough anymore. Dave wanted a ranch of his own, a place where he could help people live the same experience he did on his first visit. Dave and his wife Jan joined with Dave’s brothers Greg and Phil Dukes to make the dream come true...

  • Andrew Weaver has had a love for horses and the cowboy lifestyle ever since he was a young boy in Pennsylvania. He fondly remembers his first horseback ride on a mare named Sandy and continued riding through his teenage years. As he got older he worked for the Amish and Mennonites where he had the opportunity to drive teams of Draft horses and mules.

When he was 19 he worked two seasons for a custom harvesting crew where they cut wheat from Texas to Idaho. Upon seeing the West he knew that’s where he belonged. Inspired, he returned to Pennsylvania and started to ride saddle bronc in the American Professional Rodeo Association where he won rookie of the year.

In 2003 he joined the United States Marine Corp as an infantry machine gunner where he performed two combat tours in Iraq. After the military, Andrew and his friends from the USMC moved to Eureka, Montana to try their hand at ranching. They raised hay, trained horses and provided guided hunts for elk, deer and moose. The Bar W Guest Ranch wintered their horses at Andrew’s ranch which is where the relationship began and he hasn’t looked back since.

After graduating from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a marketing degree Ashley Arment wasn’t looking for a job she was looking for the job. If Cupid specialized in job placements he couldn’t have picked a more fitting position for Ashley himself. Growing up in North and South Dakota Ashley has always had a passion for the outdoors and an infatuation with horses. Since she was young she desired to be around horses and could be found galloping on all fours around the house.

In Ashley’s spare time she can be found taking full advantage of the recreational opportunities in the area. Whether it’s hiking in Glacier National Park, skiing, horseback riding, biking or playing Frisbee with her black lab Dakota she’s up for anything. Like so many others Ashley has fallen in love with the mountains, the slower way of life and will certainly be here for a while.

  • Fall Cattle DriveSep 15 2012

    • Description

“The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” Spoken by Will Rogers, Winston Churchill, and Ronald Reagan, among many others and finer words were never spoken. Man’s universal love of horses has taken man and horse into a world of incredibly diverse use. But, there’s one area of the horse world that isn’t mentioned enough and that’s “Cowboying,” and that may be the best of them all. “Cowboying on the Great Divide” is scheduled for this fall hosted by the Bar W Guest Ranch. It’s all about horses, cattle, great country, and you! At the Bar W, we have created a cattle drive adventure that rounds out all of the experiences of a cattle round-up. Having participated in traditional cattle drives, we wanted our guests to experience the “best of” what a cattle drive offers. We’ll begin at the ranch with horsemanship lessons working with cattle, getting your seat and making sure you and your horse are a match. Then we head out to the Blackfoot reservation for the next four days to our base camp. Over this four day trip on 50,000 acres, you’ll ride as far as you can see to gather up the cattle, drive them back to the corrals, sort the mother cows and calves, brand, inoculate, and doctor the young males. You’ll feel like a real cowhand riding out for different herds – long horns one day, then cows and we’ll even go out for some bucking horses before heading back to the ranch. We’ll round out the week with a ride to the Canadian Boarder -smooth beautiful country along Lake Koocanusa, to Stryker Peak or Krinklehorn territories - mountainous rides with steep climbs. Pricing varies depending on which room you choose and number of occupants. Price range for double occupancy is between $1995-$2400 per person. Please send us an inquiry and we'd be happy to respond with availability and pricing.
