Please provide one interesting tidbit about the ranch owners or staff...

Shelly Carroccia is daughter of Spike Van Cleve, a highly respected cowboy, writer and horse breeder. The Van Cleve family have been operating guest ranches for over 100 years. Both Shelly and Bill Carroccia were high school teachers before they purchased Sweet Grass from her father.

What makes this riding program stand out...

The family does everything they can to meet each guest's needs: diet, riding, fishing, hiking, working with cattle and the mountain scenery are all superb.

What about this ranch brings guests back...

This will be my 26 th consecutive year vacationing at the ranch and most of the other guests return...they've become an extended family. The Carroccia family's warmth and genuine caring for guest comfort and enjoyment keeps us coming back.

Please provide one interesting tidbit about the ranch owners or staff...

The guest ranch business has been in the family for a long time. There is a lot of experience wrapped up in Sweet Grass!

What makes this riding program stand out...

The scenery/location, riding choices, lodging, and people. When the website describes the ranch as remote - it isn't kidding! It is located 6 miles beyond the mailbox, at the end of a gravel driveway that takes about a half hour to travel because of opening and closing several gates along the way. It's gorgeous - snow capped mountains serving as a backdrop to the lodge and cabins, pine covered ridges on both sides, and lots of bodies of waters (ponds, creeks, falls, etc.) I really liked the option for an all day ride. Instead of a morning ride that was about 2-1/2 hours roundtrip, and another such ride in the afternoon, on the all days you could ride out for 2-1/2 hrs (see more of the beautiful acreage), eat a bagged lunch, and ride the 2-1/2 hrs back. Ends up being about the same amount of time in the saddle, but you get to go farther and see more. For not much additional cost, the cabins had private bathrooms and were so cozy and rustic in their lodge decor. They were all within walking distance of the guest lodge and corral. And the people were simply fantastic!

What about this ranch brings guests back...

All the above. You feel very much at home while there. Going back to Sweet Grass will be like going to one of my many homes away from home - a family reunion of sorts :) For some people/families that were there, vacationing at Sweet Grass has become a tradition. Once you've been there, it is not difficult to understand why!

Another bit of information you'd like Top50 to know...

The sunrise ride was a nice treat on the morning I had to return to the airport. We were back by breakfast. And, although I couldn't be there for it, they swam the horses in the creek that afternoon - bareback!

Would you return...

Definitely! Two Sweet Grass quotes rung true for me: "You can see what man made from the seat of an automobile, but the best way to see what God made is from the back of a horse" - Charles M. Russell. And this is painted on the dining room wall: "In riding a horse, we borrow freedom." Not to mention the Montana stars in my eyes, and my love of riding :)

Would you recommend this ranch to others...

Absolutely!!!
